Why You Should Watch This Unusual Isekai
What’s It About?
Satoru Mikami is a manager at a large financial company, living an ordinary life filled with work and dreaming of finding love. One day, he becomes the victim of a street attack and suddenly finds himself in a new world.
Satoru is reincarnated in a magical dimension where he has incredible power and the ability to acquire magical skills. However, there’s a catch—he’s reincarnated not as a human but as a slime named Rimuru Tempest. Now, he has to build his life from scratch in this new world while establishing relationships with other magical races. “Slime” is an unusual isekai in that, at first glance, it seems to follow the typical tropes of the genre. The main character is reborn in another world and almost immediately begins to massively increase his abilities. The magical world is full of other races—such as orcs, elves, dwarves, demons, and other creatures—that Rimuru periodically has to fight. Naturally, there are also magical dungeons with monsters and adventurers. But “Slime” has several notable features that set it apart from its competitors.
It’s a City-Building Simulator!
The core of the plot is not about completing a difficult quest or dungeon, but about the creation and development of a city. This is reminiscent of strategic computer games like the Stronghold series, where the main advantage lies with those who can build a long-term strategy and successfully meet the needs of the population. This is exactly what the main character does. He successfully establishes contacts with the inhabitants of the alternate world and creates a new city in the Jura Forest, which eventually grows into the entire Tempest Federation.
A Mature Hero
Anyone can reincarnate as a handsome character with strong combat skills, but what does a slime with decent analytical abilities and the power to absorb everything around it do? He has to use his head!
In most isekai, the main characters often reincarnate at a mature age, but they rarely apply their experience and knowledge in practice. Even in the iconic Mushoku Tensei, Rudeus, with the consciousness of an adult man, often behaves like an irresponsible child. Rimuru, on the other hand, may have changed his body and location, but he retains his age and convictions. Thanks to his human (managerial!) experience, he successfully implements his ideas. For example, he establishes contact with goblins and teaches them how to improve their settlement and connect with other forest inhabitants.
Fearsome Diplomacy
Combat strength in this anime is used for defense, not for attack. From the beginning, Rimuru proves that the main rule of the new world (“the strongest wins”) is not a guarantee of success. One of the first battles makes it clear that he uses all available means to achieve peace without unnecessary bloodshed. Instead of completely destroying an attacking pack of wolves, he takes out only the leader and negotiates with the rest, offering them shelter in exchange for protecting the village. This is his key principle: give me what I need, and I’ll return the favor.
After winning, Rimuru also doesn’t forget the moral principles he had in the human world and instills them in the monsters. This helps the creatures understand that through cooperation among different races, it is possible to build a peaceful and harmonious society without prejudice. This approach also avoids unnecessary clashes with other races and allows for a fresh perspective on villains. For example, the Dark Lords, who were always seen as a threat to peaceful inhabitants, are often interested in the safety of their charges and are eager to cooperate with Tempest.
Balance of Comedy and Drama
The anime perfectly balances humor and sadness. The comedic moments benefit from a combination of jokes and animation techniques. For example, the stylization of some characters to resemble 1980s anime is particularly successful, and Satoru’s dying request to have his computer’s hard drive erased humorously mocks the real age of the main character.
At the same time, there are plenty of dramatic scenes. In each season, the hero faces the harsh realities of the magical world, where nations and rulers indulge their greed and trample over others. Rimuru stands in contrast with his humanitarianism and makes thoughtful, just decisions. Sure, he’s a cute character with a kind heart, but it’s best not to awaken the beast within him, or all of Tempest’s enemies will have to pay the price with interest.
Well-Played Conflicts
After three seasons, it can be confidently said that “Slime” outperforms other isekai with its approach to building conflicts. Often, reincarnated heroes rely on luck or brute physical strength to defeat their enemies, with only one character showing growth from arc to arc.
While “Slime” has many battle scenes, they are interesting to watch due to the careful planning and well-constructed battle tactics. There are few pointless skirmishes, and each fight has its logical conclusion. Rimuru always tries to gain something from these battles for his Federation. He manages to improve physically along with his companions while also establishing trade and city-building in Tempest.
